Client: The Wilderness Society
Job: Concert for the Kimberley
Location: Federation Square Melbourne

Background

The Kimberley region of northern Western Australia is one of the world’s great natural and Indigenous cultural regions. To facilitate the extraction of liquid natural gas (LNG) a processing plant is proposed at James Price Point north of Broome. The Wilderness Society is running a campaign opposing this development in the Kimberley due to the impact on the environment, and the important indigenous heritage in the area.

The Concert for the Kimberley was established to increase awareness of the issue and campaign across Australia with a live concert from Melbourne's FedSquare that would be simultaneously streamed over the internet, with concert goers and online viewers encouraged to donate money to the cause.

Challenges

  1. To provide a live webcast of the concert to desktop and mobile (iOS) devices allowing users around the world to partake in the concert live, and re-watch portions of the event on demand following the event via a single mini-site.
  2. To edit a highlight video of the event that would be released directly after the completion of the live concert.
  3. To provide on Video on Demand of approved sections of the concert the next day.
  4. Share live streams and video highlights with event media partners.

Result

  1. Streamcast provided our high definition video capture and streaming pipeline for the event allowing us to deliver high quality multi bitrate live streams of the event to desktop computers (via Flash) and iOS mobile devices (via HLS). We created an event mini-site that presented differently if viewed from a mobile device.

Our high definition video capture pipeline allowed us to feed live footage direct to our on location video editor so the highlight edit could begin while the concert was still happening. This capture pipeline further allowed us to edit and provide a high quality on demand replay stream of select portions of the full concert upon client review.
  2. The video highlight package (embedded above) was available for client review within an hour of the completion of the concert. The highlight video was published on The Concert for the Kimberley website once signed off by the client. This meant video content was available whilst the on demand replay (VOD) was reviewed by the client, artists and their management.

All content was delivered via the same mini-site with the Streamcast embedded video player controlling content selection and playback - the simplest option for viewers.
  3. Video on demand footage was re encoded and uploaded overnight to ensure the highest quality video was made available to users.
  4. Our continued investment in world class content distribution via the Akamai network allowed us to provide the event media partner - Fairfax's online newspapers - the ability to directly share our live streams and highlight video replay to their existing video playback architecture. The live stream was embedded onto online news sites (such as The Age and Sydney Morning Herald) increasing the audience reach without further backend investment.
